Our History

The Journey Begins — 1980s

The Turning Point of Chester began in the 1980s through the vision and faithfulness of Reverend Geraldine Clawson. After witnessing the devastating effects of drugs, alcohol, and gambling in her community, she faithfully followed God’s call to do His work by creating a place where men could find help, hope, and a new beginning.

For months, Reverend Clawson watched a man she had known since childhood struggle with addiction. She prayed faithfully for him, asking God to bring healing and change into his life. Then, one day, the man came to her porch and asked for help. That powerful moment confirmed God’s call upon her life and strengthened her determination to open the doors of The Turning Point to serve men in need.

The Turning Point of Chester was formally established in 1987.

The Journey Strengthens — 2000s

In the early 2000s, decorated United States Army veteran John Williams joined the organization. Although he was not initially convinced that this work was his life’s calling, he began to see the impact his service, guided by God’s grace, was having on the men in the program. Inspired by their growth and transformation, John accepted the call to serve and continued the journey.

For more than two decades, John took primary responsibility for operating the Residential Recovery Program, Dove’s Nest Thrift Store, and the Community Food Pantry. Together, these three programs created a continuum of services that supported both the men in recovery and the wider community.

Through John’s dedication, hundreds of men received guidance and support, thousands of families were provided with food, and many community members received clothing, furniture, and other household necessities. His faithful service carried Reverend Clawson’s vision forward and strengthened The Turning Point’s lasting impact throughout the community.

The Journey Continues — 2025 and Beyond

In 2025, the torch of leadership was passed to Pastor Kevin Taylor, affectionately known as “PK,” the current president of The Turning Point of Chester. With a deep commitment to faith, service, and restoration, Pastor Taylor is carrying the organization’s legacy forward while leading it into a new season of growth.

Today, The Turning Point provides recovery and reentry support, permanent supportive housing, mentoring, case-management services, food assistance, affordable household necessities, and opportunities for men to rebuild their lives and reconnect with their families.

Looking toward the future, The Turning Point plans to expand its programs, strengthen community partnerships, and reach more men and families in Chester County and throughout South Carolina. When one man’s life is transformed, the impact reaches his children, strengthens his family, and creates a ripple of hope and restoration throughout the entire community.
